“Katyń” is a movie event and the most awaited film of recent years. It is not only a monumental historical drama, but, above all, an intimate confession of the director Andrzej Wajda, reminiscing his youth. It is “a story of a family torn apart forever, of great, yet futile hopes and of the brutal truth of the Katyn massacre”.
The movie shows the Katyn massacre from two perspectives: that of the women waiting for their husbands, sons and fathers to return, and that of the interned officers, who – not giving up hope – continue to believe they may return safely to their homes. The film’s basis are the stories of rotamaster Andrzej, lieutenant Jerzy, the divisional general, who comforts the other soldiers till the very end, and the pilot – designer, going through a nervous breakdown.
